Boomstick

Description

Those doggone teetotalers are here to shut down our distillery! Don't give 'em a single barrel... give 'em two! It's a good thing alcohol inspires courage. Let's pop, Loch, and drop these windbags.

What makes this special?

The only weapons allowed are Heavy and Light Carronades and they are mounted exclusively on Spires. Besides that, this rule set is a stat geek's dream because of the ammunition choices, not to mention exciting for those who obsess over tactics and strategy involving target priorities.

Tips and Strategies

It's important to note that Carronades fire a cloud of multiple pellets per shot over a short distance (approx. 0.6 of a map square) - in contrast to normal guns, each pellet has it's own path, does it's own damage and has it's own chance to ignite fire.

The Heavy variant has a 2 shot clip and fires 20 pellets per shot, while the Light has a 5 shot clip and fires 16 pellets per.

All ships share the same gun arrangement, so ammo choice is critical to edge out a victory. Heavy Carronades typically benefit from ammo which focuses on power and accuracy (such as Charged) while the Light variant's stats tend to benefit particularly from ammo that boosts clip size and firing speed (such as Greased).

Heavy ammo's main effect is to reduce the spread of pellets; Lesmok ammo's main effect increases their max distance but leaves the wide pellet spread unchanged !

Incendiary is a natural fit for this due to a Carronade's ability to stack fire quickly, thus only Gunners are allowed to carry it. Heatsink is a natural counter to the fire problem, but staying out of it's much reduced range can be just as easy.

Though Carronades have no natural armor strip capacity, they can wreck components with ease and can whittle down a Spire's hull at insane speeds if multiple focus on a single target. Grouping up and disabling one at a time is a sound plan, but be wary of bunching up too closely as the Carronade's spread can easily hit multiple ships at once.

A Spire's guns are much more suited to firing at a target above than they are at firing below. Think vertically !
