Whalehunt
Description |
From hell's heart, I 'poon at thee! Captain Ahab has given up on white whales and now wants one made of wood. Prime the depth charges. We're gonna need a bigger boat.
|
What makes this special? |
Each team has one Galleon with only defensive weapons. The Galleon represents the White Whale called Moby-Dick from the eponymous Herman Melville novel, if you didn't realize that already. The rest of each team is comprised of one instance each of the Junker, Mobula, Pyramidion, and Squid (on each team, one of these four ships will not make an appearance). The only weapons available to slay the beast are Mine Launchers and Harpoons.

Tips and Strategies |
This is one of our VIP-compatible rule sets, so it shares similarities with its sisters (Flyswatter, Glass Cannon Support). Besting the White Whale will be quite the task. The Galleon can be wrangled with Harpoons and attacked with Mine Launchers, but getting close to the White Whale could be dangerous... his violent thrashing about will push you away (with Minotaurs), capsize your boat (with Light Carronades), and shoo you from his flank (with Tar Barrels). Most likely, the Galleon will soften up enemies and his allies will finish them off. So which ship is the primary target? Do you commit to dispatching his protectors or conquering your obsession outright?
The ammunition types that alter the Mine Launcher's normal deployment range are Lesmok, incendiary, and Lochnager (yes, greased and heatsink ammo will place the mines at a distance somewhere between what you'd get by using normal and incendiary ammo, but they also reduce damage, so it isn't considered worth it). It's also important to note that using normal ammo isn't a bad thing and that direct hits are undesirable. You want the mines to deploy and then explode in the vicinity of an enemy to do the most damage, so put them near the whale; in predicted flight paths, to the sides, above, below, etc. Each Mine Launcher can only deploy five mines at a time, and once a sixth mine is deployed, the first will detonate, potentially detonating other mines and causing a chain reaction. Be careful! It goes without saying that helm tools and ammo types will affect this battle greatly. Impact Bumpers can help reduce mine damage (because mines do impact damage!). It's also worth remember that the effects of Impact Bumpers persist for 5 seconds after the tool is deactivated. This can be used to a pilot's advantage by "juggling" it; that is, activating the Bumpers for a moment and then quickly switching back to a different tool. Furthermore, Kerosene and Moonshine can "stiffen" a ship to prevent rotation, be it from Minotaur volleys, harpoon reels, or physical contact (including mine detonations). Choose your equipment wisely as you embark on your quest. |
